Acts of service: A 2023 year in review for Liberty Plastics

How do we express our values at Liberty Plastics? One way is creating a culture of caring and making a positive impact in our communities.

The following is a retrospective of the numerous occasions in 2023 when the Liberty team stepped up for a worthy cause.

We can't help but feel proud of these committed, caring people. As you learn about our community efforts, we hope it reveals who we are as a company. Because the dedication we have to our community is extended to our customers. Making like lives better is core to who we area.

Living by our values: Why it strengthens us as a company

As many of you may know, Liberty Plastics is part of Liberty Diversified International. The guiding principles in our family of companies are Caring, Innovation, Trust and Excellence. Read more about this in our blog, LDI Family Tree: A Proud Past. An Inspired Future.

These values direct our business practices. But we also extend these to the towns and cities where our employees live and work. Our community impact efforts are focused on improving the lives of children through food security, education opportunities and health. In fiscal year 2023, LDI employees donated 2,800 hours of volunteer time and contributed $865,000 for LDI Cares Choice Giving campaign to provide grants to mental health partners.

Doing our part is the right thing to do, but it's also gratifying.

"Investing in our community is an honor and a privilege," says Larry Newell, plant manager in Baldwyn, Mississippi. "As a part of our culture, it is a responsibility that we give back to improve the lives of those in need in our communities. We do this through through volunteering, supporting and contributing."

2023 in review: How Liberty showed up in the community

Liberty Plastics is headquartered in New Hope, Minnesota, with a manufacturing facility in Baldwyn, Mississippi. Here's a look back on how we came together in 2023 to support the communities where we live and work.

KIPP Minnesota Literacy Kits

Liberty Plastics donated and delivered several containers of fiction and nonfiction books to a K-8 charter school in north Minneapolis. The mission of the school is helping students living in low-income communities get on the college track.

"When we put together literacy kits for the children in our community, we are putting together hope and a bright future for them," says Sandra Freeman, Marketing Assistant. "We need to do our part for the kids today knowing that they will be the adults of tomorrow. This might seem small, however, it’s a huge impact for many lives.."

MN Food Share Month

Organizations came together in the month of March to help restock 300 food shelves throughout the state of Minnesota. To help, Liberty Plastics spearheaded a food drive that brought in 526 pounds of food, enough to provide 12 families with a three-day food supply.

The Food Group promotes access to fresh, nutritious food as an essential right and to help reduce the risk of disease. This resonates with Nate Koenig, National Sales Manager for Liberty Plastics.

“The food drive was a fun way for our team to come together in a healthy competition and to support this local home-town organization," Koenig says. "Our group competed in teams and we were able to collect over four barrels' worth of food and a few hundred dollars to be put to good use.  It was a truly rewarding experience and I am so happy we could come together and donate.”

Support in the aftermath of disaster

In April, a devastating line of tornados ripped through Baldwyn, Mississippi. The Liberty Plastics team stepped in to help. Along with volunteering with cleanup, the plant also donated supplies, including rolls of our corrugated plastic to provide temporary protection as well as our plastic totes.

Well-Being Kits

All 130 employees of the Baldwyn, Mississippi, team assembled these uplifting kits for elementary-age students to send a powerful message: Your mental and emotional well-being matter.

"Well-being affects how youth think, feel and act," says Newell. "It also plays a role in how youth handle stress, relate to others and make healthy choices. It impacts their ability to learn."

MN Food Group

Keeping our food shelves stocked takes a lot of effort behind the scenes. So the team from the Golden Valley facility sorted and packed more than 3,400 pounds of donated food, which supplied 2,800 meals to people across Minnesota. In addition, they presented a $2,500 donation to support the nonprofit’s anti-hunger efforts.

Marion Dorn who works in customer service says she's happy to help with a worthy cause, while enjoying the chance to do something different with her co-workers.

"What can I say? Good nutrition is so important for our bodies and minds to function properly," Dorn says. "Sad to know many people — especially these days — do not have the means for proper nutrition."

Greater Twin Cities United Way

We want all kids to show up feeling ready to learn. So we filled 500 backpacks with school supplies that would be given to students throughout the Twin Cities metro area.
